Containers are designed to hold or store products like food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and electronics. They are made of a variety of materials, such as plastic, glass, metal, and paper, and have different shapes and sizes, depending on the intended use. A container packaging plays a critical role in protecting, promoting, and delivering products, which makes container leak testing significant to protect the packages and ensure leak-tight containers.
Different types of containers
Containers are made from various materials, but the materials we mainly test are plastic, glass, metal, and paper rigid containers.
- Plastic: Plastic containers are popular for their durability, light weight, and versatility. They are commonly used for food and beverage packaging, personal care products, cleaning supplies, and more.
- Glass: Glass containers are often used for food and beverage packaging, particularly for high-end or specialty products. Glass is recyclable and does not interact with the contents of the container, because it is non-reactive.
- Metal: Metal containers, such as aluminum cans, are used for a wide range of products, including food and beverage packaging, and industrial chemicals. Metal is durable, lightweight, and offers good protection against moisture and air.
- Paper: Paper containers, such as the upcoming paper-based bags and cans, are used for dry goods like cereal, snacks, and baked goods. Paper is biodegradable, recyclable, and lightweight.
The importance of container leak testing
Destructive testing of containers renders the tested packaging unusable after testing, while non-destructively tested and approved containers can go back into the production line immediately. Non-destructive container leak testing, therefore, results in less waste and lower costs, and is an essential step in a production line for several reasons:
- Product quality assurance: Container leak testing helps to ensure that the product is protected from external contaminants, such as moisture, dust, and air. If a container is not leak-tight, the product may be exposed to these contaminants, which can lead to spoilage, reduced shelf life, and potential safety hazards.
- Consumer safety: Leak-tight containers are especially important for products that are consumed or applied to the body, such as food, beverages and pharmaceuticals. A leaky container can compromise the integrity of the product.
- Compliance with regulations: Many industries are subject to strict regulations related to container integrity, which makes container closure testing significant. It can lead to costly fines and civil liability if these industry regulations are not followed.

Container leak testing machine

Container Closure Integrity Tester
Container closure testing is important in several industries, but especially in the pharmaceutical industry due to the GMP quality management principles and guidelines. Oxipack developed the Container Closure Integrity Tester for pharmaceutical bottles.
Bottle Leak Tester
In addition to pharmaceutical bottles, products in various industries are also packaged in bottles. To test the bottles and their seals, the Bottle Leak Tester is used. Bottles of various sizes, shapes, and materials, including plastic, glass, or paper, can be tested using this container leak testing equipment.
Can Leak Tester
Metal container testing, such as cans, can be tested in the Can Leak Tester. This tester is able to test different sizes and shapes of cans, metal or paper based.
Multi Leak Tester and Stationary Leak Tester XS/M
Container leak testing of, for example plastic pods or glass jars, can be done with the Multi Leak Tester. For plastic or paper trays, the Stationary Leak Tester XS or M is used, depending on the size of the packaging.
