Your bottles or caps are leaking… not a pleasant thought and something that could pose a threat to your entire production line. Just imagine a leaking bottle of syrup in your chain… To test a bottle or cap for leaks, it is not always necessary or even possible to test the entire package for leaks. It might be sufficient to test the whole bottle or the top parts of the package: the cap, ring pull or seal. Is this part really airtight and leak-free? Oxipack develops special testing equipment for detecting leaks in your bottles.
Bottles must be leak tight
Liquids are often packaged in bottles. Bottle leak testing is significant to guarantee leak tight bottles. This is important in many industries, such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and cosmetics, But why must bottles be leak tight? There are several reasons:
- Safety: Leaking bottles can pose a safety hazard to both the user and the environment. For example, if a pharmaceutical product leaks from its container, it can be harmful to people who come in contact with it. Or when a beverage is leaking, the liquid is no longer drinkable.
- Quality: Products packed in bottles can be sensitive to air, moisture, and other environmental factors. If a bottle is not leak tight, it can allow these elements to enter the container and degrade the quality of the product.
- Shelf life: A leaking bottle can impact the shelf life of a product as well. Products that are exposed to air or moisture can spoil or degrade more quickly, reducing their shelf life and potentially leading to product waste.
- Regulatory compliance: Many industries have regulations that require products to be packed in leak-tight bottles to ensure safety and quality. For example, pharmaceutical products must meet strict regulations set by organizations like the FDA to ensure they are safe and effective for use.
Bottle leak testing procedures
A bottle leak testing procedure is a process used to determine whether a bottle is sealed properly and free from leaks to protect the content of the bottles. There are several methods for bottle leak testing, including the vacuum decay method, pressure decay method, mass flow and bubble emission. At Oxipack, we test bottles in a non-destructive way using the vacuum decay method (ASTM F2338).
The procedure works by placing the bottle in a chamber and creating a vacuum inside this chamber. The vacuum puts the bottle under negative pressure, which forces any air or gas inside the bottle to try to escape through any leaks in the bottle. An custom made FDA-approved membrane is used to measure any pressure changes inside the chamber. If there is a leak in the bottle, air or gas will enter the chamber and the machine will detect a change in the pressure. The rate of pressure change is used to determine the size of the leak. If the pressure drops too quickly, it indicates that the leak is large and the bottle is not properly sealed. If the pressure remains constant, it indicates that the bottle is tightly sealed and free from leaks. The bottle leak testing procedure is non-destructive, because it won’t damage the bottle during the test. It is an highly accurate and reliable method for detecting leaks in a variety of different bottle types.
Bottles and caps leak testing machines
In order to expose any possible leaks in either your bottles or caps, we have developed different bottle leak testers, all testing accoring to the vacuum decay method. Our non-destructive leak detectors for bottles contain the following features:
- For testing (PET) bottles, seals and caps.
- Simple to operate: a green light indicates the packaging is leaktight (OK) and a red light indicates a leak (NOT OK).
- The measurement chamber can be customised using various moulds and/or membranes for a variety of packaging.
- Ideally suited for factory or industrial use.
BOTTLE LEAK TESTER
The Bottle Leak Tester will test whether your bottles are properly closed without spoiling the valuable contents. Our Bottle Leak Tester embraces the top of the bottle and, with our FDA approved membrane, checks if there are any leaks in the top or seal.
BOTTLE LEAK TESTER FOR MULTIPLE BOTTLES
As per default, the Bottle Leak Tester tests one bottle at the time. However, this version of the Bottle Leak Tester has the unique ability to test up to 10 bottles non-destructively per test cycle.
