How do I test my doypack with spout for leaks? An interesting question from a packaging engineer in Latin America. The brand-new factory produces tomato-based sauces in doypacks and wants to be sure their products are leak tight. After receiving samples, the Oxipack Centre of Expertise tried to test the doypacks and pouches filled with sauce for leaks.
Large leaks were found, but the sauce clogged the smallest (micro) leaks making it impossible to detect them. However, the empty packaging could be easily tested in the Stationary Leak Tester. The Oxipack Products engineers created a program for the customer so all their empty packaging, from 5 grams up to 2.2 KG, all could be tested with the same settings.
Installation of SLT
During the on-site installation, the customer was hesitant at first, but the advantages were quickly seen. The customer compared the Stationary Leak Tester to the water bath test they used on-site. To their surprise, the Stationary Leak Tester discovered leaks in packaging which had been previously approved by them. Both the large and micro holes were detected with much more accuracy and the results were traceable to the line where the doypacks were produced.
After two days of training and validation, the water bath was removed from the factory and a new protocol was put in place to test the empty doypacks in the Stationary Leak Tester. Customer complaints about leak packs and hours of production of faulty packs is now a problem of the past.
