Snacks must remain crispy and crunchy and have a long shelf-life. Therefore, it is significant that oxygen does not enter the product, because this can deteriorate the quality of the food. To prevent this, it is important that the snack food packaging is leak tight.
As a snack food producer you must offer reliable and good quality products. The packaging must ensure an as long as possible best-before-date. But how do you guarantee this? Leak detection is very helpful to test whether your snack food packaging is leak tight.
The non-destructive way of testing with our leak detection solutions ensures that your packaging stays undamaged and don’t have to be destroyed after testing. Your product can directly put back into the production line, when no leak is found. This way, big savings are made on testing costs, products are less likely to be returned after testing, production waste is reduced, water is eliminated in the production environment and accurate and traceable measurement results are made.
TYPES OF SNACK FOOD PACKAGING
Snack food, such as chips and nuts, are often packaged in trays or pouches. Sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging is being introduced more often. The different types of snack food packaging are flexible, rigid and vacuum packaging. The vacuum decay method is used for testing flexible and rigid packaging.
- Flexible packaging: Flexible snack food packaging includes pouches with potato chips, popcorn pouches, pouches filled with mini pretzels or another nut mix and resealable pouches filled with pistachio, cashew or peanuts.
- Rigid packaging: Snack food can also be packaged in rigid packaging, such as cans, trays and tubs. For example potato chips packed in tubs, nut mixes packed in trays with sealing on top or cans filled with nuts, such as macadamia nuts and almonds.
- Vacuum packaging: Vacuum packed snack food are pouches with nuts, such as peanuts, cashews or pistachio, but in vacuum-sealed bags. This ensures an even longer expiration date.

To ensure the best quality and an as long as possible shelf-life, leak detection machines are very helpful. For the different types of packaging, different solutions are developed.
STATIONARY LEAK TESTER
Flexible snack food packaging is tested in the Stationary Leak Tester. The packaging is placed between two rubber membranes. After closing the lid, a deep vacuum is created within the test chamber. This creates a very small measuring area without damaging the packaging. With this unique measuring method, you can detect both micro leaks and large leaks without having to change any settings.

STATIONARY LEAK TESTER XS & M
Some rigid packaging, such as trays, are tested in the Stationary Leak Tester XS or M. Specially for this packaging, a custom-made insert is created in the exact form of your packaging. After closing the lid, a deep vacuum is created within the test chamber. This creates a very small measuring area without damaging the packaging. With this unique measuring method, you can detect both micro leaks and large leaks without having to change any settings.

CAN LEAK TESTER
The Can Leak Tester is used to test cans filled with snack food. To test the products, a rubber membrane is created in the exact form of the can. A bell jar containing the flexible membrane drops down over the can and then a vacuum is created in the surrounding space. I f the can has a leak, this is shown by a change in the pressure in the measuring bell jar.

VACUUM LEAK TESTER
The Vacuum Leak Tester is used to test vacuum packed snack food. To make the space surrounding the products as small as possible, a custom-made membrane is made to embrace the packaging. The VLT can even find the smallest microleaks and can easily switch to a different packaging size, by changing the clock head.

IN-LINE SNACK FOOD PACKAGING TESTING
It is also possible to use an in-line leak detection solution for your snack food packaging. The only difference with the stand-alone machines, is that your packaging is tested within the production line. The in-line machine is able to detect leaks at random, fully automatically or 100%.
