MEAT & FISH
PACKAGING
LEAK DETECTION
Meat and fish are widely consumed around the world. It is important that the packaging is reliable and leak-tight, so that no oxygen can enters. Oxygen affects the shelf-life of the meat or fish. With meat and fish packaging, it is all about the best-before-date, protection and a quickly possible sale.
With a defect packaging, the color of meat can change, which makes it look unattractive to consumers. Fish has a certain smell that you can sniff if it is fresh, when this smell is affected the product no longer smells fresh enough to be consumed. Meat and fish production and selling is expensive and keeps getting more expensive. Therefore, it is significant that a packaging is leak tight. Our leak detectors are very helpful to test whether your meat or fish packaging has a leak.
The non-destructive way of testing your packaging ensures that your packaging stays undamaged and don’t have to be destroyed after testing. When no leak is found, your meat or fish packaging can directly put back into the production line. With this solution, large testing costs are saved, products are less likely to be returned later in the chain, production waste is reduced, water in the production environment is eliminated and accurate and traceable measurement results are made.
TYPES OF MEAT & FISH PACKAGING
Meat and fish is often packed in plastic trays or vacuum films, but sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging are also increasingly produced. The different types of packaging are flexible, vacuum and rigid packaging. We use the vacuum decay method for testing flexible and rigid packaging.
- Vacuum packaging: Vacuum meat and fish packaging are, for example, sausages, a piece of meat such as steak or tenderloin, a packet of smoked salmon or surimi sticks. Many meat and fish are still vacuum packed because this often ensures a longer shelf-life.
- Flexible packaging: Flexible meat and fish packaging is becoming more popular. A packaged smoked sausage or sliced meat products are packaged flexibly. Nowadays, chicken or minced meat is sometimes packed in flexible packaging. These are also sustainable packaging, which is now being increasingly monitored.
- Rigid packaging: Meat and fish is also often packaged in plastic or aluminum trays, such as pieces of fish, oven fish, chicken and a lot of other meat and fish. Some rigid packaging are canned, such as tuna, anchovies, pate and sausages.
MEAT & FISH PACKAGING LEAK DETECTION MACHINES
To guarantee reliable products with a long shelf-life, leak detection is very helpful. For the different types of packaging, different leak detection solutions are developed.
VACUUM-SEALED LEAK TESTER
The Vacuum-Sealed Leak Tester is the solution for finding leaks in vacuum-sealed meat and fish packaging with moisture and minimum of air inside. The VSLT has a built-in vessel and vacuum pump, which created a deep vacuum in the test chamber with a very small measuring space around the meat or fish packaging. The leak tester can test different packaging shapes and sizes because of the custom-made exchangeable cavity blocks.

STATIONARY LEAK TESTER XS & M
Some rigid packaging are tested in the Stationary Leak Tester XS or M. Specially for this packaging, a custom-made insert is created in the exact form of the packaging. The meat or fish packaging is placed between the insert and one flexible membrane. After closing the lid, a deep vacuum is created in the test chamber. This creates a very small measuring area without damaging the packaging. With this unique measuring method, you can detect both micro leaks and large leaks without having to change any settings.
Stationary Leak Tester M
CAN LEAK TESTER
Within the Can Leak Tester, tin can packaging is tested. Specially for your can packaging, a rubber membrane in the exact form of the can is created. A bell jar containing the flexible rubber membrane drops down over the packaging. A vacuum is then created in the surrounding space. If the can has a leak, this is shown by a change in the pressure in the measuring bell jar.

STATIONARY LEAK TESTER
A flexible meat packaging or fish packaging is tested in the Stationary Leak Tester. The packaging is placed between two rubber membranes. After closing the lid, a deep vacuum is created in the test chamber. This creates a very small measuring area without damaging the packaging. With this unique measuring method, you can detect both micro leaks and large leaks without having to change any settings.
