Ricardo Burgess is Quality Assurance Manager for Amcor Flexibles in Cape Town, South Africa. Amcor is a global leader in the development and production of sustainable, flexible packaging for an array of companies in the food, beverage, pet food and pharmaceutical sectors, specializing in bag-in-box, pouches and reel stock packaging material.
So how did Amcor arrive at Oxipack’s door? Ricardo explains: “It was about four years ago at our plant in AF Novgorod that I was first impressed by what Oxipack can do. They had just installed one of Oxipack’s leak detection units. That particular division was already supplying pouches to a global pet care supplier. At the time AF Cape Town was embarking on cross plant learning to qualify for creating and supplying pouches for the local market. We also decided to purchase an Oxipack unit, as part of the qualification process.”
The client Amcor hoped too deliver their products to, had and still has a stringent programme of leak detection testing frequencies. Ricardo: “That meant we were required to check and test the packaging regularly. Oxipack’s unit allows us to review all the test results and take the appropriate measures.”
It turned out that Oxipack’s expertise was a great help. “We successfully passed the qualification process and are currently supplying pouches to that particular global pet care supplier,” enthuses Ricardo. “The Oxipack unit is outstanding, so that we now use it as our primary test for leak detection, as well as for all the other pouches we manufacture.”
Ricardo is also pleased with the support provided by Oxipack: “The process itself isn’t particularly complicated; the machine only requires compressed air and electricity. The entire installation and training were done by Oxipack here, on site. They also visit annually to carry out a full service and calibration of the unit.”
Would Ricardo recommend Oxipack to other companies? “Well, I’d certainly be at the front of the queue recommending Oxipack to everyone in the sector. The unit is really easy to use. The results are extremely accurate and can detect micro leaks. It gives operations the confidence that the pouches we deliver to our customers won’t fail.”
